Ubuntu 9.10

Having made the move to 9.04 I have to say that I'm completely delighted with the results, so much so that it is now an effort just to fire up my Vista partition to get the updates for my security apps and other rubbish.

9.10 would appear to be one of the most significant Ubuntu releases for some time according to several reviews I've seen of the alpha format. Come the end of October when it goes final I shall now ditch Windows completely in favour of Ubuntu

Ubuntu has been on my radar for some time now. The Live CDs have worked well for me and it's probably time to start thinking about and planning for a perment installation on one of my PCs. Thanks for the heads up MC and I'm glad it's working out well for you.

Ok
After having mepis installed for 2 years I figured I would give ubuntu a spin. I made one big mistake. I went ahead and installed it on my hard drive.
First: It would not allow me to carve out my own partition the way I wanted. It just went ahead and created its own root and swap partions with no input by me. This might be good for most people but not for someone that has multiple partitions already.
Second: It gave me no choice on where it placed grub. Yup wrote it right to my MBR
Third: It relabeled my partitions.
*note* I did not choose the advanced install meathod. I chose the install side by side option.
My bad
Fourth: It did not recognize my nvidia hardware while mepis did. and of course it thought my lexmark printer was a paper weight. (no suprise there)
Although after some looking around I was impressed with the interface and thoughtful desktop.
Final verdict. Simply Mepis still works best for me.

The really great thing about this though compared to Windows is the amount of choice available.

Anyone following my ramblings from an early stage will know that I have no option but to connect from where I live using a USB broadband modem. My knowledge of Linux is not good enough to script the connection myself so I have to rely on the local wise guys who only want to work with Ubuntu because it's easy. Left to my own devices I would probably have chosen either PCLinux, SUSE or even Mandriva. Maybe when my experience evolves I'll migrate to a different distro like so many others before me.

If your talking about doing that in ubuntu, its too late off the hard disk. I had to restore my previous mbr and all is back as it was. I also realize ubuntu and mepis are debian based. For now I will stick with mepis. It may not have the bells and whistles ubuntu has but I am very pleased with its stability. I just wish packages were made compatible with both OS's. Synaptic in mepis is real good about ensuring all dependencies are included. When I use aptget to install ubutu packages it does not include those dependencies. It does however tell me whats missing, but what a hassle to download each and every lib file etc.

I can not wait til Ubuntu 9.10 comes out. I have heard that the boot times are EVEN faster.

I just found this a few minutes ago. Will Ubuntu 9.10 Work On Your PC? I personally think that such a thing should be included in the LiveCD of any Linux distribution. Although it may not be easy but it's good to have such a diagnostics software included in any LiveCD.

This shows the commitment currently being put into the Ubuntu development.
The promise to get this service online and make it accessible to everyone is what will really count so let's hope it happens soon.

This is great!
Although ubuntu is not right for me at this time. Its great to see some action to help people decide beforehand if linux is right for them. Bravo to the ubuntu community
