Chrome is my default browser and most of the user options relating to security are in 'under the hood' in tools. Today, PC Magazine had an article on Chrome ... it will have IE9 Like Download Reputation Protection. in the next release.
I have not opened IE9 since I got W7 (2 years ago) and I have never customized it for security. I was surprised to see so many security offerings (none default=on). To try it out I turned on Smart Screen, Active-X filter, and tracking protection. I could not get the online protection lists to 'add' as I kept getting a pop-up to download IE9 (?). Not sure what this was all about. I'll check out their forum. This Download Reputation Protection looks like quite a good thing to have. Hope it does not interfere with my sandbox setup. Does anyone here have BufferZone or SBIE running with this IE9 option turned on? |

I like to use IE9 once in a while, some sites just only work in IE :S
Anyways, it's fine, I'd call it about even with chrome if chrome didn't have extensions, but it does so I like chrome more... but I like firefox best lol (but I'm using firefox 3, so it kind of shows I'm a bit behind , but chrome/IE are both up to date)I run IE fine inside sandboxie as well, downloads come through to the folder I set it to and well, IE just doesn't give me any errors, not that the other browsers do either. IE is really a slick browser now by itself, but no extensions means that it isn't playing the same game as the rest of them. |

I could not find anything on the IE forum on this. There was one post there that was close in content ... another add-on not being accepted. The poster tried a lot of tweaking but nothing worked, then an MS moderator answered that IE9 had to be the default browser or it would not work. He said that IE9 is structured that way.
I set IE9 as my default browser and tried again. I got the protection lists to 'add', so the moderator was right. So this has now been solved. I reset my default browser to Chrome and the add-on is still operational in IE9 so I guess the default setting only needs to be there if you want to access their goodies. I found that my sandbox application did not interfere with this operation. Hope it stays that way. I am sure IE9 is a better browser now than it used to be. I still like Chrome, but the more I read about extensions not being vetted by Google I am becoming more reluctant to install them. I understand that Mozilla has a better vetting process and I do have a few extensions installed on that browser. If IE9 can build effective security solutions into the base browser then there will be no need for all these extensions and add-ons that are out there. May be this is the year of the Browser. |
