I have done offline updates by this way several times. It can be done when a PC has no internet connection, or the connection is unstable.

In case of Avast, the updates are quite small, and so can be done via the program itself. In case of Avira though, the updates are large, and that can be a problem in case of unstable connections. Also, the process can be really slow on a slow connection. In that case, offline update is a better option. I haven't used Avira for a while, so maybe things have improved in case of updates.

Default Gigaget won't let me brouse while downloading

Gigaget and Flashget both seem to download pretty fast but I can actually continue to brouse the web a bit while Flashget downloads. I just can't seem to do that with Gigaget. I can only speculate why that happens but it does consistently occur. I just can't brouse to any new site while Gigaget is downloading. I'll admit that I am usually trying to download several items at once when this happens but still, Flashget allows me to go to a new web page and Gigaget does not.

Flashget seems particularly fast when I am just trying to download a single item; I seem some bps speed readings then that I just don't hit with other downloaders. What mystifies me is that Flashget does this even though it seems to have some ads while Gigaget does not. I don't even want to like Flashget because of the ads but I can't argue with the performance.

I had used Gigaget long ago... and I had observed that apart from the main download, it also downloads parts of the file from several mirrors. That's how it speeds up the download, but this in turn may lead to browsing becoming slow, which is happening in your case.

Have you tried Orbit Downloader? You should try it if you haven't.

I found that the Orbit grab ++ (I tried Orbit 4 and its earlier v3) hasn't yet supported Firefox 3.6.6
Hope Orbit will release the update soon to solve this problem

I'm now back to FF 3.6.3 and Orbit 3.0.0.3

I use orbit downloader but thinking of changing from it mainly due to the open candy and the annoying update popup menu.
