Checked on Sleipnir the other day for the latest version, which is now v2.9.9, and noticed there is now a Sleipnir 3 as well, a completely separate install. Downloaded it and have been messing around with it when time has permitted.
Sleipnir 3 is for Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone and iPad. I'm using it on Windows. It's a 16MB download and is 52.5MB installed. At the moment it's at v3.2 and is "Compatible with the newest Gecko rendering engine", 'Gecko veiwer', which means it's like a dual engine, Trident and Gecko. Trident is default. At the moment the browser is very customisable but by no means the finished product, they're still developing it, see here. For instance, I've installed the WOT and AdBlock Plus extensions for the Gecko engine and while they both work, there are no buttons displayed in the toolbar - or anywhere else for that matter. But you do get the WOT search ratings with Google and it does block the red rated sites. Haven't tried any more extensions yet. The browser runs reasonably light, although it may feel a little buggy at times, but for those who like to try something different now and then it's worth a look, see how it develops. Even though it's new there are many options available to easily customise the GUI to your liking. Sleipnir is developed by Fenrir-inc, which is a Japanese company and for those familiar with it, and for me personally, there seem to be shades of Lunascape with Sleipnir 3 [especially the WOT button ]It's not for everyone, I know that, but some of you might want to take it for a spin. Only plug-in as yet is Roboform, which I don't use, but they say more are on the way. The site page is here; Sleipnir 3 for Windows - and from there you can navigate the site for other versions, Mac etc, and read about the browser itself. Click the 'community' button for the latest forum info, but do remember that some postings may be in Japanese, although it's mostly in English from what I can see. |

Thanks deya. Good to see extension functionality coming through now. Yes, it does look like they've been "considering" Lunascape in some ways.
Being in the same country, it's more than likely the devs share at least some data between them, even if this isn't a voluntary process

I suppose they do all borrow each others ideas, MC. As for data sharing, I'm sure I read somewhere that back in 2004 the guy who first developed Sleipnir had his laptop stolen, which contained all the source code for the browser
... so who knows?I'll keep using it and see what happens in the future. I still use Sleipnir 2 [as an IE alternative] and if this new version [3] ends up with as many settings and options then it should be quite a decent browser, plus it has the dual engine which never materialised in 2. I know that these browsers will never become a first choice for people, not in this part of the world at least, but when you look at what you get as standard in terms of settings and customisation with Sleipnir and Lunascape it does show what can be achieved without necessarily having to add tons of extensions. However I also realise that having all those options can have a negative effect because many people are fazed by them all, they don't want to, or simply can't get to grips with it all ... add-ons are just so much simpler. Which may be why Sleipnir is going down this route. Lunascape is such a good browser, I love it, but can totally understand why many people won't use it. Development is also much slower with these browsers compared to the mainstream ones, and both Sleipnir and Lunascape alike seem [to me] to go wandering off into other areas, smart phones etc, which I think kind of stretches their resources. This seems to result in problems not being resolved properly, the add-on buttons issue for an example [in both browsers] Sleipnir 3 could be an exception though, because for a new project there are already a lot of good features incorporated into the browser, there's a lot you can do with it once you start looking deeper at it. But still, it's early days so we'll have to wait and see what happens. |

Sleipnir 3 updated today to v3.0.3. Installed via the browser updater with no problem. The release notes are here. ... and there was I, in the previous post, saying how slow they were to update stuff. Bookmarking has definitely improved with the new version. Also, I've noticed plugin container.exe running in processes when using the browser which I don't think was there before. Might be wrong, but I can't recall seeing in the previous version.
