Default How to make Firefox work better

Mr K. started this great thread on Ffx stuff. We had to move it, so ignore the author name on the first post etc, it's all down to him...

-----------------
Firefox web browser has the best plugin system and the most plugins available, and since that is the basis of success for webapps of any kind right now, means it's the top dog for that reason if no other.

But it also has a lot of configs that can be tweaked, to make it work better for your purposes. The default configs have to suit everyone everywhere, so they may well not be optimal for you.

Firefox spell-check in webforms

The built-in spell checker is good but it doesn't work in forms. But you can tweak it to fix that:

1. Type about:config in the address bar in Ffx, hit Enter.
2. In the long Filter box below the address bar, type spellcheck.
3. Right-click on the line layout.spellcheckDefault, then click Modify. Change the value from 1 to 2.
4. Restart Ffx.

The spell-checker should now work on most website forms.

Default Make Firefox scroll faster

The mousewheel makes life 100% easier, and I've never figured out how Mac users manage work at all The default set-up is dead slow, though, and only OK for precision scrolling at best.

So you need to speed it right up, to take full advantage of its tremendous potential. Mine is set to 9 though that may be too much for some. Luckily there is also a control to revert it back to 1-line scrolling when needed. To speed it up:

1. Type about:config in the Ffx address bar, hit Enter.
2. In the long Filter box below the address bar, type mousewheel.withnokey.
3. Right-click on the line mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines, then click Toggle. This will set the value to False.
4. Then right-click mousewheel.withnokey.numlines, click Modify.
5. Raise the value to about 8, click OK.

Check it out in another tab to see if the scroll speed is OK. If not, try another value up or down. Remember this doesn't affect other apps, just Ffx.

When you need it to scroll s-l-o-w, just hold Alt + scroll, it creeps along at 1 line per click. Neat huh.

Default Firefox tab tweaks

Ffx made life easier in a lot of ways. One of them was the browser tab - but there are more ways to use this function than is generally realised. Here are some sweet tips for rapid working:

Open a link in a new tab:
hit the mousewheel button
[sorry, don't know the Mac equivalent - anyone?]

Open a new (blank) tab:
hit Cntrl-T

Tabs are drag 'n drop now, in the latest Ffx versions. Click and hold, on a tab (ie the pagename tab at the top of the webpage view, below the toolbars), then drag the tab left or right to its new position.

Undelete:
hit Cntrl+Shift+T
...and a closed tab pops open again. Or right-click the tab toolbar and hit Undo Close Tab.

You can have multiple web pages, ie tabs, open with Ffx on start-up. So you can have Gizmo's, Google and Facebook all open when you start Ffx.

Open all those sites in tabs. Then, click Tools >> Options >> Main tab >> Use Current Pages. Now they'll all fire up with Ffx.

Also there is the PermaTabs plugin, which, er, makes tabs permanent (for a while).

[none of this was written by me, compiled by another from other sources, just moved here by me]
