After having some problems with Google.com the last couple days, I started looking for a better initial page and home page.
I made the mistake of changing some account settings and now every time I go to Google.com it tries to load something called an "iGoogle," which I don't want loading at all, ever. In any case, I tried Dogpile.com, but I didn't like it very much. It's a bit too slow and the extra stuff it loads isn't very helpful. But I like it as a search engine. (I was surprised at all the Yahoo! exclusive items returned in its engine. Perhaps Google isn't so comprehensive after all. By the way, Dogpile has a simple addon for Firefox's search box here.) So I have Firefox load a blank page as my start page now, and I have Dogpile as my Home Page just for the Home icon. I did a little searching and found one site that says it's the best Home Page: http://besthomepageever.com/. It doesn't quite beat my blank page/Dogpile combo as of yet! But I'm sure there are better home pages to have.

SRWare Iron and Safari have the same, in fact the Safari version looks like something from the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. Trouble is you need a system with Warp Drive just to run it!

Personally, I really like Yahoo's "My Yahoo" homepage. You can adjust the columns, add things, delete things, add news pages, add local TV guide, local movie theaters; plus a tone more tweaks.

Another thing similar to the Speed Dial screens is to use a blank screen with bookmarks doing the job of speed dials, except bookmarks aren't as fancy!
I have some family members who rely on toolbars to get around and usually their start page is the same as whatever site they have their email account with. I guess I'm getting more skeptical of these site + email provider relationships since I see that Google automatically transfers my email contact list over to my igoogle page. Granted the igoogle page they have for me is only filled with advertisements for their igoogle features since I won't use it or add anything to it, but I don't like them mixing services like that without telling me.

google.com.au
I got a prompt asking me if I wanted to try out igoogle and said no. I still don't know what it's about and don't want to know. The beauty of google is the size of the page to load on my slow and limited satellite connection. |
