Default Looking for bootable hard drive diagnostic tools

Have a WD SATA 1 disk running under XP x64, that won't boot in normal mode. It will boot in windows safe mode or command prompt only.

Looking for a bootable hard drive diagnostic, since can't start XP normal mode.

Downloaded the WD Data Lifeguard diagnostic for DOS (CD) iso file & burned as an image w/ nero & also w/ Infra Recorder. The disk begins to boot, starts to load the IBM-DOS, then black screen. I've read the same prob of others on WD's user forum. No concrete solution.

Downloaded it a couple times & burned as image w/ different burners. No go. Tired of messing w/ the WD tool. Other iso files d/l & burned as bootable disks recently to troubleshoot (like memtest86+) booted / ran fine.

Thanks.

Hi Misty,

if you can boot in safe mode and access the command prompt, why don't you start disk diag tools from there for a start?

You can use Windows own chkdsk. See more about the command line parameters here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHKDSK

Maybe you want to read this article too about reqriting he master boot record:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/69013

I would assume that you can also start the disk diag tools on the CD you burned from the safe mode command prompt.
