I have not yet found a program that can search files for Chinese characters such as 太阳. PdfXchange viewer does the trick for pdf files, but there must be a simple program out there that can handle a wider range of file types.

I suggest that you could take a look at these two portable freeware:
Index Your Files: http://www.indexyourfiles.com/ XSearch: http://www.easexp.com/xsearch/ IYF will do an index job, the indexing will take a few secs, then you can type and search. Searching speed is high, and the preview function is very useful. It can search both names and contents. XSearch will do a classic search, that means no indexing job. It can search both names and contents, but no preview function. |

Another search engine called "Everything" also supports searching Chinese characters. It's super fast, searches file names only, but not the contents inside the files. There might be more which I've not tried out. So long as the program supports the Unicode standard, I think it should then be able to search Chinese characters.
