has the capability to create a bootable recovery partition on the same disk as the partition I am imaging, rather than store the image to a separate hard drive (which, by the way, I already do regularly).

There's the Windows Recovery Environment available in Vista and above. You can access it by pressing F8 during boot, and choosing Repair Your Computer.
It can restore system images made by Windows Vista Business and above, or all versions of Windows 7. |

You are asking an inconsistent question, are you wanting to create a recovery partition for your system, or wanting to store an image of your system? Or both maybe?
A simple atypical solution: install another XP, only the minimal necessary to run your imaging program and store the image of the main system.

norton ghost does this, but not free :S but you might be able to use a free trial for it.
yeah I know a "broke" rule by not talking about a freeware but unless I can think of one, at least you can see option of doing this at least. I've done this on a new hdd after dell's broke and i recreated the recovery partition since dell wouldn't give me a real cd (I had to barrow cd from friend though lol) but computer companies force people to use recovery partitions now unless you buy the cd. didn't want to buy a cd since i'm already paying for the OS in price of laptop but dell didnt want to waste 25 cents for a CD without charging $15 for it. So I don't feel bad when I just make my own recovery/OS cds now. |

Hi,
I'm not sure if I understood correctly what exactly you want to achieve, but Paragon Backup & Recovery 2011 Free Advanced can create a so called Backup Capsule on your HD where you can store your images. When setting the Backup Capsule, you can activate the bootable recovery environment, i.e. you get the choice to boot directly from the backup capsule for maintenance or recovery purposes every time you start up the computer. To do this you assign a hot key (F1 by default). In order to create the Backup Capsule you need to leave unallocated space, preferable at the end of the HD. The Backup Capsule is a hidden partition. Cheers
