Default Kiosk freeware needed for XP

Hi

As Windows SteadyState is no longer available for download does anyone know of a reliable kiosk software.

It's for a library in a third world country and a friend is asking for help.

He says "Really all I want is to restrict non-admin users so that they can't
use the CD/DVD/USB ports to get data off the machine (it won't have an
internet connection) and to restrict the apps that can run so people
don't make a mess of things. Plus anything else which needs to be
done to keep those rules enforced. Admin needs to be able to connect
so they can upload new videos etc."

Any ideas, I know nothing about this at all :-)

Part of the trouble is that even though it is a library in a 3rd world country, they don't really fit into the category of "Personal use only type freeware licenses." Returnil System Safe http://www.returnilvirtualsystem.com/ is a program that is free for personal use, that virtualizes the running system. Users can pretty much do anything they want to the system and it will not have any lasting effect. As soon a the computer is rebooted, every change made by users simply disappears. However nothing in Returnil will prevent people from getting data off the machine.

There are some other commercially available programs that may do everything, but your freeware options are sadly very limited.

On another note there are non-Windows options, it they are willing to switch over to Linux.

That's really a windows sandbox isn't it? Or am I missing something.

Actually that's a very interesting idea and it just may do what he wants. Thanks :-)
