Hi Guys,
I am looking for a desktop feed reader that has the equivalent of Adblock and possibly doesn't use IE as engine. I have tried the highly recommended FeedDemon but at least for me is unusable. Apart from the ads which I haven't been able to block in any way (I installed all sort of Adblock equivalents in IE to no avail)it hangs constantly. Maybe I have too many feeds (300) with high retention times but that's how I need it. Many thanks

Hi Threshold, can I suggest another option?
Earlier, when I was in need of RSS readers, I tried some of the programs, like RSSOwl, Snarfer etc. I noticed that to display the feeds, they used their own browser kind of thing, which I found insecure, and at that time, it also attracted virus from my network. That's when I turned to Google Reader. Main thing of Google Reader is that I do not need any software to be installed on my system for it. Then, I can access Google Reader from within Firefox, with AdBlock Plus already installed, and other things. And its really easy too, and many of the sites support Google Reader. If you have a Gmail account, you can use that login to access Google Reader. Hope you find this useful.

![]() I did try the GReader route but I cannot say I much like it despite I concur on all the benefits you mention. Besides I think Greader doesn't support private rss but I am not sure and even if i still don't like it much. ![]() I would love FeedDemon if it actually worked but at least on my system (which still has 4 GB of RAM) it's unusable. ANy further suggesion appreciated. Thank you.

Please only convey recommendations for paid software to Threshold via PM. If they appear here as posts they will just be deleted.

This might be way off the mark for what Threshold is looking for but SeaMonkey, the browser, has a good built in feed reader in the mail and newsgroups feature. It might not be what you're looking for but it does support AdBlock Plus once you install it in the browser and it doesn't use the IE engine.
It's not a stand alone reader, but I use it all the time and never have a problem with it. You could have a look at the SeaMonkey feature list here and see if it's any use to you. |
