I often find myself wasting humungous amounts of time surfing the web and/or watching downloaded media on my PC. One solution to this would of course be to throw the thing out and return to pen and paper, snailmail and such, but guess what - i need to do some stuff on the comp/online. :l
Right now the situation is getting quite acute, since i need to write a major essay and just cant stay focused on - or even get started with - the task enough! What i would like is a program that will let me block a certain apps from running for a set amount of time before unlocking them again. Lets say i set it to 60 min. Then thats the time i have to wait before running thoose apps again. When it comes to my browser (i prefer Firefox) i would not only be able to lock it for a set time, but also to limit the use differently for different domains. Lets say i want to "whitelist" some pages as necessary for work/emergencies. If i do that i should be able to access them even during "no-surf" time. Idealy i would also like to limit the number of visits/time spent daily at certain other sites, namely the ones i find i waste the most time on. Anything like that out there? (And yes, if theres some shareware/commercial product you know of please give me a tip anyway.) Thank you! |

Temptation Blocker is a program that lets you lock yourself out of specific applications for a specified period of time. A window displays how much time remains. In order to unblock a program you must enter a 32 character string as a disincentive.
I've been using this without problems for a few years. It hasn't been updated for a long time but it worked fine in XP and Vista and works fine in Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit). I used to be able to sneak back on to the internet through links in my Thunderbird but it stopped letting me do that a while ago.

But unfortunately any and every s/w is still under your control and you will end up turning it off after a while (or a few days). The real s/w that needs to be controlled is the one that runs our bodies and lives - "Our Mind" and for that I can recommend The Power of Positive Thinking by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. A must and an excellent read!

In any case, I think I'll see if that book is available at the local library. |
