Default OpenOffice 3.2 available

If you have been waiting for the latest release of OpenOffice, it is now available for download. www.openoffice.org

I downloaded it yesterday and the GUI is still less than desirable, but there are security improvements that make it worth getting.

Oracle finalized its takeover of Sun Microsystems Jan 27,2010 and issued a press release indicating that they are committed to continuing the openoffice platform. At this time, it is still freeware.

Version 3.3 Beta is now available, with the final rel. date TBA (later this year).

There are many feature and enhancement updates in the Beta version.

I am going to wait for the final release rather than downloading the Beta. Will report back then.

Let us see how the takeover by Oracle helps OO.o improve as a productivity suite. I've been using it since version 2.4. The users' forum is as helpful as possible. However, with the takeover by Oracle, at least one thing has changed: portableapps.com, my favourite site for software downloads, has not been in a position to release the portable version of 3.2.1 till now. I understand that certain permissions are yet to be provided by Oracle (and that their legal team is otherwise occupied ).

I'm not going to upgrade from 3.2 since I personally don't see the need to in terms of new must-have features. The security enhancements don't bother me since I don't send or receive documents or use OO.o when on-line.
