My laptop came with win7 pre installed, but in case of HD failure i want a re installation disc. I plan on ringing Dell and asking them to send me out one. But if they tell me i have to pay i was wondering if i can modify one i download from the internet. I found one that is a Dell OEM in the and i looked into the $oem$ slp.cmd and it has the same activation code that is currently installed on my laptop.
where can i find the windows activation Key so i can modify and put my Key in, I assume that if i do this the disc will be the same as anyone Dell would send out to me. Any thoughts?

I don't know if downloading the ISO is legal, wouldn't it be the same if i borrowed a win7 disc and added my own activation key? Since i won't be using there key to activate it but one i have purchased when i purchased my laptop. I don't think it would be illegal to do this.
But that's why i want to modify a OEM disc a place my OEM Key and my windows 7 Activation Key inside it. So it becomes a re installation disc of my laptop that i can use for a emergency like hard Drive failure, instead or relying on the recovery partition, if the whole hard drive fails. As far as im aware making a re-installation disc of my own OS and keys isn't illegal since it's only going on my laptop. if this thread does press on anything illegal I'm happy for the moderators to delete.

The best thing would be to ask from Dell itself, if such a thing is legal or not. They can give the best answer.
Also, some laptops have the option to create recovery disks, on CDs/DVDs. Look for that option on the laptop.

Why don't you use the Windows 7 feature to create a restore disk? Details at this link.

Well it happened..... I gave up the idea to create my own disc and contacted dell, but they were certain that they could resolve the issue over the phone and wanted to charge me £69.82 for support..... I thought to myself "uuuuuh NA" and decided to go down a different route all together. That is to press the F8 key and select repair computer, i went to the Dell Recovery options to restore back to factory default but got the error code 0x400110020000100C. Which is the main reason i wanted a recovery disc from dell, not just the standard one that i can build from windows, and the backup i made onto my DVD disc's is not the factory default. So it looks like i will be making another half hour call to Dell to try and get the Disc from them. Unless theres any advice anyone from here can give me
