1. what are the benifets or lack of benifets by re- booting the external modem? (it is a gateway 2 wire).
2. is an external modem considered a router ? 3. what are the "need to know" issues associated with the external item and is maint. required on my part in any fashion? 4. lan connection |

1. I'm not sure of the benefits, but I will tell you that tech support always told me to re-boot the modem if I was having any connection issues. (That was with a 2-Wire modem.)
2. Some external modems are also a router and some are not. For example, the Gateway 2-Wire, I believe is both. I used it with Qwest DSL service and it's all I needed. It was a modem, a wireless router, and had a built-in hardware firewall. However, now that I'm with Comcast cable, I have both a cable modem and a wireless router (with built-in firewall). 3. The only maintenance that I'm aware of might be the occasional bios update or firmware update. Back to question #1--as I mentioned, occasionally they might need re-booted (turned off for 1 minute and turned back on).

The functionality of modem, in simple words, is to receive internet; the router distribute the signal to any device connected ).
