Hi davwar
shell folders in Windows are specific folders that are used as the default location for specific file types. An example is "My Pictures". Whenever Windows is told to open or save an image file it will offer you this shell folder first. More importantly, applications use shell folders to store configuration settings in it. And usually your not asked when they do. The good thing about it is you will know where to look should you need to. You can also change/move the shell folders if you like. E.g. when you want your "Favorites" folder to be on a different drive you could do so by moving it there. If you Google shell folders you will find more details.

Windows has a number of special virtual folders that are object interfaces and containers. There is some information about the subject at this link.
