Thumbs down missing dvd driver

hi,

let me begin by saying that my computer savvy is only slightly above the walking/chewing gum level.

my HP dv9913cl laptop seems to have eaten my dvd driver, and tells me it cannot "detect" the driver !
the cd/dvd drive will not function.

the HP support site/chat people can offer no assistance.

I've tried the various Control Panel/Registry avenues with no success

the laptop uses Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit and has a Firefox 4.0.1 browser.

can anyone offer any assistance , either, resurrecting the original driver OR in downloading a replacement ( replacement seems the better choice )?

thanks,
pete eisenhauer

I had a similar problem. I had to reinstall my dvd/cd driver. First from device manager go to your dvd/cd then properties and uninstall you dvd/cd driver. I rebooted and while it was booting it said there was a new device detected and the computer reinstalled the driver. This worked for me

When do you get the error that.. driver cannot be detected?

Did you search for the driver on the HP site with your laptop model number as reference? Generally, drivers are available by model number.

I found it here for you :

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...=3743995#N1080

However, there are no drivers for optical drive there.

You may want to look at this troubleshooting page :

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...t=3743995#N491

The above should be able to solve your problem.

Worth trying out. I had thought of that, and wanted to post this, but I thought that if the optical drive is not getting detected, then maybe it won't show an option to uninstall it, or there won't be an optical drive listed at all. That's why I thought it best to link to official pages from HP.

But, its a solution worth trying. Can fix the problem easily, if it works.

This article contains a good guide explaining how to view and uninstall any unused device drivers that may be present.
The info you need is on that page under the sub-heading "Remove Unused Devices"
It actually refers specifically to graphics card and monitor device drivers but does cover other devices as well. Obviously in your case you will be looking for devices listed under DVD/CD-ROM drives.

If there is a problem with the DVD/CD driver it may be marked with a yellow exclamation icon.
To uninstall a specific driver right-click on it and select uninstall.

As mentioned in the article, do not uninstall anything you are not sure about!

On reboot Windows should hopefully rediscover your DVD/CD drive as "new hardware" and automatically install the necessary driver.

hi,

I have already tried all the HP avenues and neither the downloads web site nor their chat link offer ANY assistance.
Since the driver cannot be detected (device manager or registry) it cannot be uninstalled.
What I am seeking is a replacement (preferably freeware) driver that will function with my CD/DVD drive.
I've looked at the write-ups for Uplayer and MagicDisc but they seem to have as many negatives as positives.
What I want is a viable replacement for the failed original driver and if I have to pay for one that works and can be downloaded that's perfectly fine, so long as it will work.

pdde2006, did you try the link posted by Sope? That should have worked.

Do you see a yellow exclamation mark for the optical drive?

Are you sure that the optical drive is in a working condition?

Generally, there are no drives available for optical drives, because the drives get detected by the OS automatically, and installed too.

If you cannot get it to work by the proposed methods, then I suggest that you take it to a laptop repair shop.. preferably from where you bought the laptop, or contact a local HP center.
