Printer can't communicate

XP sp-3 My PC won't communicate with my printers. Print spooler service is running, the printer is set as the default, there are no errors in Device Manager. I have tried all the obvious...change USB cable, unplug power cable, install latest firmware and drivers, etc. I tried both an Epson and a Lexmark printer but in both cases I get 'Cannot Communicate with PC.' Manufacturers do not have a solution. I'm sure problem is not with the printer hardware. Help!!

Are you connecting the cable directly to the pc`s usb port ? ie not using a network hub ? Have you tried a different usb port .
