I am a software author who wishes to make the software available to people. The sites I have investigated (which is the top sites reviewed by Gizmo) all require you to have a website from which to download the software which the freeware site provides a link to.
I don't want to have a web site for this. I want to upload my software to the freeware site, have the site provide an index to it (complete with a description I supply), and have it downloaded directly from there. What is the best freeware site that offers this, hopefully at no cost to me? |

Maybe Sourceforge would be an option? Then other major sites like softpedia could pick it up from there.
What type of software is it?

I really have no idea about these things, but still I would like to make some suggestions, which might be helpful.
If you are planning to keep the software open source, then Sourceforge, Google Code, and Codeplex might be the solution, which allow project hosting. On what terms and conditions, and on what basis, I don't know though. There are free web hostings available, which let you create a website for free. So, why not go for that. Its always good to have a website, if you want to provide your own software to the world. If you have a website, you can then tell other free download sites, to link to your software, and website. Whereas, if you do not have a website, you will just be able to host the software only on one download site.
