Default multiple desktop environments

My medical software requires a different screen resolution/font dpi size than I like to use in general. I've read about software programs for setting up virtual desktops, so you can have several different desktop environments. Can I use something like that to have one environment (resolution/font) for the medical program, and my usual settings for everything else? If so, is there a program you recommend?
