antonio, please look at these pages, for solving this error :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555302 http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000630.htm http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2605/..._volume_error/ According to the article on second page, this can be caused by a corrupt boot.ini, or a bad hard disk. All three links have steps to solve the problem. Microsoft page, and had third page have clear steps how to boot into recovery console, if you dont know how to. You will need the XP disc to do that.

thanks anupam - i read thru the links and i think i need to give a bit more detail - i dont have the original windows xp install disks - the laptop came with a toshiba recovery disk but it only ends up wanting to overwrite the hard drive and reinstall from a hidden partition on the hard drive.
i do have another laptop (the one im using to write this message) but its running the 64-bit version of windows vista. the bad laptop is running the 32-bit windows xp. does this make any difference? |

antonio, good to hear that your problem was solved, and you are able to use your laptop again. However, I must warn you about Hiren's boot CD. I have seen this mentioned on various forums, and it was mentioned on Wiki too. Hiren's Boot CD contains many copyright infringement software, and therefore it is considered warez and even illegal. We here do not recommend it. You are free to use it on your own risk.
