I know this subject has been beat to death, but here goes. I have Vista 64 bit on a new HP laptop, when all is OK the pc starts fairly quickly (8 sec +/- start up bar), normal wait to sign in. All of a sudden, the start up bar now takes 25 sec. I have eliminated as much from msconfig start up as possible (I think) I have turn off services/processes that have been recommended. I did not install new software before this began. Win firewall and defender are disabled and only comodo virus/firewall starts w/windows. I have done virus, malware scans with no baddies showing up. My disk is defragged and cleaned and checked for bad sectors. I'm patched current with MS and all and checked with securnia. I still can't get this start up bar back to 8-10 sec. Is there a gremlin in my system?

1. Run an online antivirus scanner like HouseCall just to be sure.
2. Empty temporary files/folders. (I know how to do that in XP, not sure how to on Vista 64.) 3. Uninstall any torrent-type programs and/or anything like Limewire or Itunes. 4. Install and use ProcessExplorer to determine startups and services. (Not sure if it's 64 bit or not.) 5. Run SmartDefrag. That's where I would start.

Another possibility for slow start up could be due to compatibility or corruption of device drivers. I've had this slow startup experience until I make sure I've installed or reinstalled all the device drivers correctly for a laptop.

I know how it is with lots of programs starting up at once. You should try to limit the amount of programs you run in the background to keep your computer running quickly, especially if you don't have a strong processor, or a lot of RAM. That being said if your like me you may need quite a few programs running. Startup delayer, allows you to choose what programs run and which don't. It also however, allows you to choose which programs you would like to delay the launch of. Meaning instead of windows trying to start 20 programs at once, you can space them out in which ever order you like, and it will launch them like you want it to. Not overloading your machine at boot. Here is a link to this program's website, for more information. Startup Delayer Website.

I thank all the folks who responded, D4RK 4NG3L, I am trying "Stantup Delayer" and only two programs showed, Java and OpenDNS. Kendall I've defragged, emptied all temp etc, run my anti virus and a web based one and don't have any torrent software and have an Autorun file that doesn't show anything out of the ordinary and I still up to 25 green bars where I used to have 8, thanks all......
