Default Home Network help, XP/Vista/Win7/Win8

I have always had issues on my home network, I want to solve them since we have added a new HP Laptop with Windows 8.

The Network is:

Desktop - Windows 7 - network cable to wifi router
Laptop 1 - Windows XP Pro - wifi connect to router
Laptop 2 - Windows Vista - wifi connect to router
Laptop 3 - Windows 8 - wifi connect to router

All have no problem connecting to internet, or connecting and printing to wireless printer.

For years Laptop 1 worked fine with Workgroup connection to Old Desktop also running XP.

Laptop 2 (Vista) was added and could never network Laptop 2 to share files with Workgroup.

Then replaced Old Desktop XP, with new Desktop Windows 7, setup Desktop win 7 on Workgroup, Laptop 1 could see and access shared folders on Desktop but Desktop could never see and share Laptop 1 files.

Now we had New Windows 8 laptop, and it is finally important to share files on the network, so have to solve the above problems.

All 4 have same Workgroup name. The windows 7 & windows 8 have been setup as a Work not home network per instructions on MS website.
Neither the Win 7 desktop or the Win8 laptop have been configured for a homegroup, per MS website instructions due to the XPpro laptop on network.

*I would prefer to NOT have to use login/password to share folders/files on this home /workgroup network.

Desktop Win 7 cannot see Laptop XPpro or access it's files. Note I have a network scanning utility that does see the other computers on the network.
Desktop Win 7 can see Laptop 2 vista, but can not access files
Desktop Win 7 can see Laptop 3 Win8 but can not access files. (when clicking on Laptop 3 in Computer/Network screen, a popup shows asking for user name and password to access Laptop 3.

Laptop 1 XPpro can see Desktop Win 7 and access shared folders
Laptop 1 can see Laptop 2 vista but can not access files/folders.
Laptop 1 can see Laptop 3 Win 8 but can not access files. (when clicking on Laptop 3 in Computer/Network screen, a popup shows asking for user name and password to access Laptop 3.

Laptop 3 Win8 can see Desktop and access Desktop's shared folders
Laptop 3 cannot see Laptop 1 XPpro
Laptop 3 can see Laptop 2 vista but cannot access folders.

There is more than one way to do this depending upon what you are trying to do. For example, you could use public folders. How many folders and files are you allowing access to on each PC: All, most, some, few?

A better way to describe what is happening is what can be seen on each PC, The NOs are the problem:
Desktop Win 7 - see and access
Laptop 1 Win XP PRo - NO see and NO access ie network discovery or NETBIOS is off
Laptop 2 Win Vista - see and NO access ie turn simple file sharing etc on
Laptop 3 Win 8 - see and NO access ie as above

Check the following:
  • Network location type = Private should turn on Network Discovery
  • Network Discovery = ON
  • NETBIOS over TCP/IP = ON for XP Pro PC
  • Simple File Sharing = ON
  • Password protected sharing = OFF
  • Firewall blocking for File and Print Sharing = OFF. Might have to set an exception for it.

There's lots of help if you search online for tutorials on these.

I'm always wary of no passwords but troubleshooting is easier without them. Anyway, when you use a share should be the only time that the passwords need to be entered.

Can you point you Network settings?
IPs
Gateways
Network Mask
Firewall settings
in every terminal?

Have you been here already?

Does this tutorial work for you?

If nothing of above worked, then it may require additional steps.

Never tried this tool but, look useful and it's free
