Hi, I'm new to this forum and basically, have absolutely no knowledge about network connections, software, freeware..... just think of me as a usual college freshman girl..!
So from yesterday, I've been trying to download some torrents using bittorrent and it just doesn't work for some reason. I'm a Mac user and I'm not living in the US so I think other users won't know about my internet service provider or something. (I'm living in Japan and uses NTT) But for years my computer (both PC and Mac) were fine with downloading stuff using bittorrent or utorrent and it's been super fast too! With good torrent files, speed used to go up as high as 2MB/s or usually 500~800kb/s (for a movie or 1 tv show series, or music albums..) but then now i can't download anything... and they say "connection rejected" or for some torrents with really high seeds, the speed is like 13kb/s.. I've been trying to figure out on my own but with absolutely no idea about what "configuration" is, I can't do anything! Help me please? And also I've read a couple times that bittorrent is bad? or more like, less safer than utorrent..what does that mean and why? Thanks soo much in advance.. |

When overall torrent speeds suddenly change, the reason is almost always one of these:
1. The ISP is interfering with bittorrent. I did not find anything directly on NTT, but did find that their subsidiary Plala, does use packet filtering to interfere with bittorrent. See here. So it is possible that this is being used. 2. New security software has been added to the computer. Have you added, updated to new version etc, any security software? 3. New hardware has been added to the network connection. Have you added or changed any router or modem? Quote:

Thanx for ur reply! and to answer some of ur questions..
I haven't added or updated any security software.. But yes i did buy a new router a couple weeks ago. but it had been working fine till yesterday when all these problems arose. and YES!! the trackers part of the bittorrent popup say "connection refused". sorry it says refused not rejected anyway if it's an issue with the trackers, what's the problem and how can i fix it? btw, thank you for explaining it so easily! |

What is the make and model of the router?
Did you update firmware or re-boot the router before the issue started? The "connection refused" error is a tracker error and might be caused by the tracker or something on your end. Is this one tracker? If so, which one? I am not familiar with the Mac version, so I am not sure where the port number uTorrent uses is located in the preferences. If you know the port number, or can find it, try testing the port number, while uTorrent is open, at CanYouSeeMe. Do you get success or error? Hopefully finding the exact issue will be as easy as it has been so far. |

i don't think it's the router's problem because nobody touched the router since we installed it and it was working just fine.. !
there were about 10 trackers and several of them said "connection refused" and some said "connection timed out" and some "working" i found the port number and i checked it from the link you posted and it says error.. Error: I could not see your service on ~~~ on port (47587) Reason: Connection timed out the incoming TCP port name was 47587.. is that normal? |

Other than that, avoiding a conflict with other software's use of a port is the only issue and that is unlikely. The safest choice is a port in the 49152-65534 range as these are not assigned to any software. "Timed out" is usually a router issue or an ISP issue. Given that there are a number of trackers involved, the issue is probably on your end and not the trackers. Did you ever forward the uTorrent port through the router? If you can connect without the router, it would be a good idea to try that and see if a port test gives "Success" or not. That way the issue could be narrowed. Take a look at the "Forwarding the Port" section of this guide and try setting an exception for uTorrent (might as well change the port to the safe range now) in the router. Optimizing µTorrent for Speed The screenshots will probably not match a Mac version, but all that is important is the port number anyways. |
