Default Issues Regarding Torrents

Hi there, I've just downloaded a torrent client for the first time (Tixati) and honestly, I'm pretty confused by certain aspects of it as I'm not very good with softwares. Glad if you guys here can offer me some help

Referring to Optimizing Tixati for Speed, I obtained [Error: I could not see your service on (IP Address) on port (51234). Reason: Connection refused] despite trying all sorts of Port Numbers from 49152-65534.

What does that mean in simple terms? Are my ports working or..? And I manually adjusted my network using the Static IP Guide and still received the same error message. :/ Any ideas where I might have done wrong?

And this sounds rather silly, but what would you consider a good torrent downloading speed? (I'm using a 64-bit Windows 7 if that is of any use :/)

Sorry about the questions, I'm really a beginner at this and googling up my questions just made me even more confused, ;(

Hello starshelle

Though I am now way an expert it seems your trouble may be caused by your Firewall

From Optimizing Tixati for speed article:
Quote:
Introduction
A router will block incoming communications unless an exception is made. All software firewalls will block incoming communications and most will also block outgoing communications, unless an exception is made. If you are "firewalled", then other people will not be able to initiate connections with you (see Why Is Being Firewalled Bad).
As there are many firewalls and routers, this guide can not give explanations as to each. However, there are guides available, on the internet for most firewalls and routers and this guide will link you to them. Note that PortForward.com does not have guides specific to Tixati. Choose a µTorrent guide and substitute Tixati where µTorrent is indicated.

Software Firewall - The permission should be set to allow TCP and UDP in both directions. Generally, you will have a choice to set permission for the Tixati port or for the Tixati program. Setting permission for the port is the safer choice. You can check these options for guides:

* The help file of your software firewall is the best place to look
* The µTorrent forum has some guides posted
* PortForward.com Firewall Guides(choose firewall and then µTorrent) also has some guides.

As to the testing issue, as WDHPR has stated, it most likely is a firewall issue.
A firewall should block ports unless it has been told not to (by you). Almost all people have a software firewall, but some also have a firewall in their hardware (router).

Have you set an exception in your software and hardware firewalls(if any) ?

If not, try setting those exceptions, open Tixati and test the port you have chosen as your Tixati port.

If so, what is the make and version of your software firewall and the make and model of your router (if any)?

If you have set exceptions and are still failing;
Are you on a network (school, work etc) for your internet connection?
What other security software (anti-virus etc) do you have?
Do you have any hardware besides a router between you and the internet (such as a modem)? If so, what is the make and model of that?

As to the speed question, there is no overall "good" speed.

A good speed for you is one that is close to the maximum that your internet connection allows. The download speeds of different internet connections can vary greatly. The test of internet speed for the adjusting internal settings in the guide is mostly used to get the upload capacity of your internet connection, but you can also use the download speed result as a gauge of how your speeds are doing.

Also, speeds on each torrent can vary greatly. The content is distributed using the upload bandwidth of active users. If there are few active users on a torrent and/or the active users have very low upload speed, then the speed on that torrent will be slow. If there are many active users on a torrent, speeds should be near the maximum of your internet connection.

No question is silly, so do not hesitate to ask more.

A would download the lightest, simplest and best torrent client that money can't buy and that would be utorrent.

I know this doesn't cure your problem but bear with me as ive tested so many torrent programs which most of were utter crap.
I don't know the program you are talking about on your post but U-Torrent is famous for being insanely easy and makes other torrent programs look dated and bloated.

Its secret is shameless simplicity and size, its tiny compared to other torrent programs that also take over your pc and do things you din't want.
When i tested Bitcomet i was shocked at the liberties and permissions it took, no torrent program can be safe but this was borderline malicious.
When i deleted a torrent, Bitcomet only deleted it from my list and then buried itself in a folder it created as an archive and continued to seed.
Its default upload ratio was crazy and it pinned itself on my start menu even though i selected it not to.

Utorrent requires some set up work but its simple and easy and will make torrents an easy task.
It has a help file if you get lost but some common sense should get you there.
Torrent programs want to connect asap to seed constantly and wipe out your internet connection so always go into settings and check the boxes not to start with windows and to close when you press close, not go to taskbar.

Utorrent has a brilliant little feature that will work out your optimum speed and detect your bandwidth for you.
Simply select options/set up guide and hit run, when its done select save and close and thats it you are ready to download at best performance from a program thats tiny but powerful and streets above anything else...
