I have been using picpick for a while for screen capture and in general I really like it but I have noticed that every time I open or close it that it connects to the internet and that kind of bugs me. "Check for program updates" is uncheck and always has been, does anyone know what it is up to?

The IP address is of the PicPick site. I think the program must be connecting to the site to check for updates. Nothing to worry about. Still, if you feel it should not phone home, you can block it via your firewall... which is how you came to know that it was phoning home... I think.

If I started picpick when I was connected to the internet, as well as connecting out a small nag screen would pop up saying that I would have to buy picpick if I wanted it for commercial use. There was a box to check if I did not want to see the message again, I checked it every time but it would always come back next time I opened it. So it was not just the update option that it was ingoring. I bloked picpick with my firewall as you suggested and so far the issue has not returned.

I have been using PicPick for a long time now, but I haven't yet come across the nag screen that you talked about in your post. Anyways, its good that you blocked it with your firewall, and you are not getting that issue again.

Just an update. I had been using picpick 2.2.9. From memory I had downloaded it from cnet. I have now downloaded version 3 from the link at this site and all the problems I decsribed above has gone away. No more connecting to the net no more nag screen.
Thanks to the posters for their time. |

Thanks zanzizzi for posting back
. Must have been something in the previous version, which they changed later. Anyways, I always use latest versions of software, and I download them from the main site of the software. You can subscribe to software sites like kaldata.net, or freewarefiles, to know when the latest versions of the software are out.
