If you are not seeing a network icon on the bottom gray line, then there may be something corrupted in your uTorrent.

Try a clean install. Note your port number (I assume you used it for the router), exit uTorrent and move the Application Data folder of uTorrent to another location. Then re-download uTorrent here:
http://www.utorrent.com/downloads

After install, set the port number to the previous one that you set an exception for in your router.

Also, check your Windows Security center at Start>Control Panel>Security Center to confirm that Windows firewall is your firewall and to check if there is any anti-virus active.

I went into C:\Documents and Settings\admin\Application Data and moved the uTorrent folder from there to the desktop. Then I followed your link and downloaded uTorrent 1.8.5. In the popup window I changed the port number to the number that I had forwarded through the router and did a port test, which was successful. There is still no icon along the gray bar though. There is only "DHT: Waiting to log in", "D: 0.0kB/s T:0B", and "U: 0.0kB/s T:536 B". I also found this message listed ten times in the Logger tab: "[2009-11-09 23:04:06] File not found during integrity check: C".

Security Center shows Windows Firewall and Automatic Updates ON and also shows iolo Antivirus OFF. It's confusing to me that it still even lists the program, since I deleted it from my system.

My best guess is that Iolo never installed correctly to start with and the way in which it has been removed since has only added to the complications. This is yet another of these odd-ball security apps which causes problems for a lot of people when they try to remove it.

This is provided by the vendor:

I'm assuming that now you may well have system conflicts, especially within the registry, which will be very difficult to locate and fix. Although I no longer service PC's when I did, and whenever I encountered a similar situation by far the best solution was a reformat. You could hire a tech to look at this for you but there would be no guaranteeing a clean result. Unfortunately, in this case file and registry cleaning software won't help either.

Did you delete the whole system mechanic suite or just the anti-virus?
I have seen some issues with System Mechanic and uTorrent.
MC's post goes towards what I was thinking: that something has messed with your system to auto-corrupt uTorrent.

I would like to see if this is a residual issue just with uTorrent.

Try downloading and installing BitComet. During install, undo the browser integration, de-select their home page and comet options and un-check the option to start Bitcomet on Windows startup.
http://www.bitcomet.com/doc/download.htm

After install, go to Tools>Options>Connection and make sure Enable NAT/Firewall configuration in ICS/ICF (XP/Vista Only is enabled. Also, set the listen port to the same one as uTorrent's (do not have uTorrent running at the same time).

BitComet should show right away whether DHT is connected on the bottom gray line near the right-center.

Thank you for your replies. I did delete the whole System Mechanic. I downloaded and installed BitComet and followed your instructions. It was a success, as I was able to download my first torrent, which I was very excited about. Is uTorrent much better than BitComet, or should I just stick with what works?

Unfortunatey, I've had some further issues with my system. Firstly, I went to move the downloaded files into my Seagate external hard drive and when I went to open the drive, I got a message saying it is not formatted! I did not opt to format it for fear of losing my entire music collection. I'm able to play the files through iTunes, but can't access the drive in Windows. Do you happen to have any suggestions on this issue, or should I ask this in a different forum?

Next, when I turned on my laptop the following day, my wireless icon popped up with a message saying I had an IP conflict, that another system on the network was using the same IP. I was unable to access the internet. When I clicked on the Support tab under the Wireless Connection status the IP address and Subnet Mask showed 0.0.0.0. I assumed the conflict had to do with uTorrent and BitComet having the same port, so I uninstalled uTorrent, but this did not help. I wound up extending my warranty with Linksys and after a couple hours on the phone they connected to my system and reset my wireless network. However they also set up a static IP and opened the port again for BitComet, so at least I know that's been done properly.

So, I'm back up and running, I believe BitComet is working properly, so I'm thinking I should prob stick with that unless it's worth it to figure out what's up with uTorrent. I'm just left with a new issue with my external which scares the life out of me.

No BitComet is right up there with uTorrent. Check out Optimizing BitComet for Speed to get BitComet set up for best download speed.

As to the Seagate issue, I am not sure what is going on there, but I think you were right not to re-format. Try posting a new thread and see if someone has some info to help.

Glad to hear things finally are set up.

Enjoy.
