Default Drive Image XML size problem

I used DIxml to back up a disk image. I went back to restore the disk. DIxml insists that the hard drive is too small. It is the same physical drive. Format shows that the disk has 1 more sector than the disk image. What is going on? All the files appear to be available to Browse and copy individually. The disk is a data disk and not bootable.

The first thing that pops into my head [after a long time staring blankly at nothing feeling confused] is that you may be trying to restore a full disk image to the partition created on the disk. The first sector is the MBR and is not part of the first partition. So your drive letter, say 'D', with its root data directory, is really 'partition D' not 'drive D'. Is this a possibility? Make sure you are informing DriveImageXML to restore to the whole disk, and not to a partition.

May I ask why you want to go with an image for a data disk? It is usually easier and faster to use regular backup software for data. Please don't think I am telling you not to, or that there are no reasons to use imaging for this situation, I am just curious, always always curious, limits the cobweb infestation upstairs [that's where we keep the crazy folk...]

This is an addendum: I was trying to re-create your situation, and I see that a sector-by-sector image is the only choice for imaging a whole drive, is this the type image you made? Since DIXML doesn't have a mount-image option, troubleshooting this will be that much more difficult. I misread your post before, thinking you meant the image had one more sector as that made more sense, but you're saying that data is correct, but DIXML still thinks the image is larger. I will try a few other ideas out, in the meantime, if you could see about the possible MBR issue and get back with me, that would be a big help. At least you have your data there to copy if needed.

I suspect you are right about the boot sector. I tried several times, and maybe I need a new version if DI. I couldn't find any way to do a sector by sector copy. And it won't reinstall the imaged partition into a partition on the hard drive. Fortunately the files are still there to copy off.

thanks fo rthe help.
