Each time there is an upgrade for Macrium Reflect Free, they advise to make a new rescue CD. I have not been able to make one that works for well over a year.

I have used an 8GB usb stick for a Linux LiveCD. I wonder if it's possible to put the rescue CD on it.
It would be nice if such things were easy, but that is way out of my purview. I suspect you could easily do it, as long as you had the source code. Lacking it, probably not possible. Hopefully, someone with more understanding of these things will answer. How is the rescue CD failing?

I just realized I have no idea what kind of product you are talking about from Corsair, what is it they assert is OS independent? I have a few Corsair devices that are really really OS independent, but that sure isn't too difficult for a power supply or thumb drive.

I can confirm that Paragon Backup & Recovery (Advanced) Free does have an option to create a bootable recovery CD or USB drive. Today, I made a fresh image of my laptop with base OS image, MS Office, antivirus and updates.

I then installed Paragon, created a rescue USB drive (I had a spare 16GB flash drive that I wasn't using for anything). I then booted successfully to the flash drive, and did a disk image, compressed to about 10GB, so it fit perfectly on the flash drive. The whole imaging operation took about 35 minutes.

Now, for the second phase- to do a test restore on a separate hard drive!

Quick update - I installed linux (Mint, if you want to know) from live CD, and then rebooted after install. I plugged the USB flash drive in and booted to it- and have successfully restored the original Windows 7 image that I had created earlier. I'm quite pleased.

All in all, I found the Paragon software fairly easy to use, and the image seems to be working fine. The laptop successfully booted, and no errors have been reported.
