Well. I know the only way to really learn this stuff is to dive in and try it!
You've given me a lot of great advice; I'm getting psyched up now, and will start trawling for good tutorials.
And shopping for a spare drive, as well. (I'm in northern Japan, and that kind of shopping is an hour's drive away). (and wouldn't it be wonderful if you could install Windows OS on USB drive ---- no more hardware-related activation --- chaos! anarchy! Bill Gates in Bankruptcy!)
And funny you mention Linux, I just downloaded Portable Ubuntu to give it a beginner's tryout.

Thank you so very much for all your patient input. I'll be busy for some days getting all this sorted out, and report back how things go.

I was raised to only ever tell the truth, even when I'm being anonymous on the internet

Drive Backup 9.0 Express for Windows®

Get it here;
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/

Features list;

http://www.paragon-software.com/home.../features.html

( More good free stuff there as well;

http://www.paragon-software.com/down...downloads.html

Notably; Partition Manager 9.0 Express for Windows®

Drive Backup 9.0 Express for Windows®

Rescue Kit 9.0 Express ),

Will create and burn the recovery disc for you, ( of course you need a CD burner drive).

To recover an image you saved somewhere, ( external USB drive is commonly used), you just boot the machine with the recovery disc and restore your image.

There are a lot of options in the Paragon software, but it is very reliable, and easy to operate.

Regards.....
