When in doubt, some of the image SW out there allow you to mount an image backup as an active volume (read only) in Windows and peruse as you would any other volume, including using anti-malware and other utility tools to determine the integrity of the image contents before re-introducing problems via an image restore.
I'm starting to [attempt] to build up the motivation and stamina to learn how to use MS's tools for imaging, Imagex and the WIM format. A really nice thing with those tools, you can mount an image, work on it as if a real drive, and then unmount it and all the changes are properly retained. The imaging programs we deal with all mount "read-only".
