Default Virtualization Section

I was wondering if you would consider setting up a separate section for virtualization products, methods and tools. I find myself all over the place when I do a search on this topic.

Virtualization has taken many forms within the past few years and it is becoming a more prominent concept in current day PC operations. It has gone from nice to have to must have for many Gizmonians, so I would find it helpful if we could have a more in-depth debate on it.

As a rookie on the subject I was not aware of its applicability or reach. I have learned that it is available not just as standalone products, but it is also incorporated in anti-virus products and browsers.

So here I am dabbling in SBIE and I have Avast 5 and Chrome 8 installed. I upgrade to both Chrome 9 and Avast 6 free (both announced as having sandboxed capabilities) ... will my PC get overwhelmed with all the activities that this change will incorporate? Will there be compatibility issues? Will I need to make some serious configuration changes to accommodate these powerful apps all running together? Will this be the last nail in the coffin for XP due to the performance prerequisites of these powerful apps. or will it make XP the little engine that always could?

To be able to draw on the expertise of others is the value-add of this website. There will be so many more applications of virtualization as we go forward, so I thought it deserved its own space.

Do you mean a separate forum here for Virtualization or a specific section over at the main site?

As for adding a forum here, that could be done. However, I would need some direction/guidance from the planning group.

I would think just a section would cover it.

I think that's a great suggestion emmjay! I had similar thoughts today as well.

Again, I assume that you mean a forum here dedicated to the topic?

Kendall, Either would be great. My own preference would be for a forum here dedicated to the topic. Hopefully some other members will weigh in on whether that would be appropriate or not.

This sounds like a good idea.

I've also thought about splitting the Security into sub forums for say Antimalware, Firewalls, Other. Virtualization could also be a possibility but the problem is when you start splitting things it requires moving a lot of threads and we need to justify that such a move is relevant for the amount of traffic each section is likely to receive. On the other hand, maybe splitting the Security forum will attract more?

Ultimately the choice is Kendall's because he's got to do the work but things can always be changed back or in other directions later if it doesn't work out.

I am struggling with the idea of adding another forum to be honest. I wonder if we don't have actually too many forums. However, I'm certainly open to the idea. A couple questions:

1. What would the title be? Virtualization?
2. Which section should it go under? Freeware Forum or Debating Chamber?

The last question, and probably the most important:

If we decide to create this new forum, are there any moderator's who would be willing to assist in moving any threads dealing with "virtualization" to the new forum?
(Time is not something I have a ton of right now....)

I feel that this should be first discussed in the Planning Group. Its true that we can always do the things back to how they were, but, it is good to plan first, and then implement, because time is of essence for everyone.

I am quite willing to take the responsibility of arranging things, but first we should discuss it over within the team.

It should be in a subsection under security imo.
