Hello,
The link below takes you to a site that lists and reviews the "best" OPEN-SOURCE freeware on the net... in other words, it's very similar to this site (sorta), but it places the further constraint that the software must be open-source. I myself am ok with freeware or such that isn't open-source, but was just noting. http://www.opensourcewindows.org/ It does a fairly decent job in it's suggestions, though it's reviews aren't much, and it isn't a wiki. But again, it does a decent job for what it has to work with (which considering it's both free AND open-source... isn't always so much). Sometimes there aren't free alternatives to great commercial software (eg... in my opinion Open-Office.org or AbiWord is TERRIBLE compared to Microsoft-Office in many ways... just my humble opinion). Anyways, what I am going to say goes further than this. I come across SEVERAL sites like these, because those are the kinds of places I hunt for... list and review sites of free stuff. If you would create a Sticky Thread in this category, then people can submit List & Review Freeware Sites and that might make things much easier on the staff here... considereing that much of the software has already been reviewed by like-minded people with similar motiviations to our own... just on a different freeware site. In the thread, people can make new posts at the bottom, and the moderator can then simply copythat data as a link and one-line description to a running list in the top-most post in that thread... thereby giving both staff members and people looking for freeware in general (versus just a particular genre or app) a great resource, easy to find, access, and bookmark. About the link you have posted... I came across this link many years ago, when I had just started to know about freewares. I had the site bookmarked. But, I checked it some days ago, and the list remains the same... the website has not changed from a long time, since years. I am sure there are more open source programs out there, that could have been added to that webpage, and made into an awesome list. Because of this, I removed the bookmark for the site recently.
About the freeware sites list, its really not a bad idea. It would be good to know different freeware sites, that people find useful. If we share that knowledge, we can make a great list. Such an article is present at the main site, but it deals with freeware and shareware sites both... and is also not being updated regularly. Maybe we can take this further up, and develop a list of only freeware sites. Here is the present article : http://www.techsupportalert.com/best...ware_sites.htm Some good sites have been suggested by some people in the comments there, which I added to my bookmarks. I am sure the management and planning team will read this, and work on the idea. Thanks for the suggestion.
