I have really enjoyed this site and visit daily to see new threads. And the fact i can post any problems and have other members help and support. But with my latest post about the Zbot Trojan i weren't to sure of where to post. So i posted it in the General section, because if it tuned out to be genuine its not really a security issue.
You have a thread to post security issues, But that can be a wide range of things including software, Problems with the programs, ect. How about a section specifically for The latest scams and viruses ect. where if a really convincing email scam like the Zbot scam or a new virus, trojan ect people can post to it and find info easily. Basically threads just listing the new dangers to avoid so to speak and if you have one of the problems advice on how to sort it.. As time goes on my post on ZBot will vanish into the back pages. And if a new member in a months time receives the same email and doesn't look into the back pages they will end up posting the a similar thread again. |

Thanks for the suggestion.
Yes, security is a wide area which involves antivirus, antispywares, malwares etc. Genuine or not, the thread about ZBOT was related to security. That's why it was transferred to the security forum, as that was the appropriate forum for it... because it raises issues related to security of the PC. There are not many threads about scamwares... yours is the first I think. So, I don't think there is any need to open a separate section for that. There are many threads on the forum, which are important, but they get to the back as new threads are posted. But for such purpose, search feature is there on the forum. So, if a user wishes to see if a thread was posted about a particular issue, he/she can always search for it.

Speaking of sections, I know a forum without a single section. The Slax Forum! Anyone been there before?
http://www.slax.org/forum.php All threads are mixed and there are no sections, anything ranging from problems to announcements or notifications to HOWTO guides is mixed. I wonder how they survive all those years without sorting... |

It's not really a good idea to do that, several people have complained about it but I guess not organizing the forum makes the Slax forum unique. It is after all based on Slackware. Slax... Slack... not much difference...

I must admit, if I want to find something in a forum I virtually always do just a general search and pay little attention to which section the results come from. The only time I take note of sections is when I want to start a new thread in which case I'm forced to categorize it under a relevant section! I guess sections are more important to those who have an interest in one particular aspect of a subject rather than just any new topic currently being discussed? Presumably it makes a moderators life easier though!

Probably depends on how your brain is wired. Some people like anarchy, some like riules & regs. Chacun a son gout, & all that.
If I'm interested in webware, maybe I'll prefer dipping in a board about that, instead of trawling through reams of stuff about beer recipes or PHP coding. Another day I don't know what I want and am happy just cruising. So there's space for everything. |
