Scammers are repackaging free programs and charging for them. Here is a link revealing some offending websites. Programs like 7Zip and Notepad++ are being sold to the unwary. In some cases legitimate freeware is being replaced with malware.

Here in Brazil, this practice is like an epidemic where CD's given away with PC magazines are concerned. Nearly all of the free programs are manipulated in one way or another. Merely opening the CD is often enough to trigger something

All of these fake software are available from fake sites. That's why we stress on downloading the software either from their home site, or, from reputed download sites, and not anywhere else.
