This is one of the many faces of Brazil the politicians would rather the outside world didn't see.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-13536298 I had first hand experience of this myself albeit on a tiny scale by comparison. Within days of moving into this house I was approached by a local official who offered to "sell" me a license to cut down the protected trees. Where I live is a conservation area

Hmm, Lets make large area's of the countries forest conservation areas. Then let government officials issue licenses to allow the cutting down of tree's in the forest. I can not imagine how such a thing could lead to corruption

In the end we only took out one of the big trees but because this was close to the house anyway, permission was not required. When my wife told this guy (MC doesn't speak Portuguese
) we didn't want to cut any of the others down so wouldn't be needing one of his bent licenses to do it, he got very upset. He even went as far as to say I might "have trouble" in the future if I refused his generous offer. Luckily, the only things that intimidate me now are cold coffee and Man U. losing to Chelsea so he went away poor and unhappy
