I read a version of this story somewhere yesterday. Bad news for the guy who's wi-fi was used, but while the responsibility for securing their network lies with wireless router owners who are not necessarily too tech savvy or educated to the risks, these things will continue to happen. The chances of these things happening might be reduced if wireless routers left the factory with the security settings on the maximum possible for the hardware, that way the hardware owner would have to work out how to reduce the security if they wished to share their internet connection.

From the first article (quote) " Lying on his family room floor with assault weapons trained on him, shouts of "pedophile!" and "pornographer!" stinging like his fresh cuts and bruises, the Buffalo homeowner didn't need long to figure out the reason for the early morning wake-up call from a swarm of federal agents."

Good to see the basic principle of "innocent until proven guilty" is the mantra of these federal agents! IF that's what was said it's highly unprofessional. In dealing with suspected Child Sex Offenders one must never prejudice the investigation by letting one's own (naturally boiling emotions) take over ... that's when mistakes happen and strong cases are lost.

I think Police officers get extremely worked up in these particular types of raids/arrests. It must be very difficult to keep your 'professionalism' under control in these circumstances.

But, i must say from past experience at the year long Wapping Printworkers Dispute. Innocent until proven guilty was really laughable back in the 1980's. I don't think it has improved any, in 25 years.

I hope he learned his lesson, and secures his wi-fi.

.

Did you see 'Life on Mars' and 'Ashes to Ashes'? (Policing in the UK in 70's and 80's - TV series) Some news items and You Tube clips these days show that some things don't change ... as you point out.
