Default Speed

I"d enjoy hearing personal stories about how folks make their computers run faster and freeze up lesser.

Adding TSA links to your methods would be nice.

For a small example:

I defrag. See: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best...fragmenter.htm

I've found that disabling and deleting unneeded start up programs enormously helps my computer's speed.

CCleaner is not only a great cleanup program but offers an easy method for such:

I believe that using as few as possible security programs helps computer
speed. If I install a new program and my computer acts sluggish, that
program is gone, I wont trade performance for security, no matter how
much I want to use that program or how good its supposed to be.
Speed, I think, its also better if you have as few Icons on the desktop
so I only have nine. I don't use fancy wall paper or make any changes for
looks. Following what I mentioned has my computer running great, usually
getting the speed I am supposed to have and not freezing.

Thanks for your valuable input, Bo.

I'm surprised that my speed thread hasn't gotten much reply.

I can think of numerous ideas for speeding up the 'puter.

I'll give it another week or two. If the thread topic doesn't get much feedback, I'll retaliate by being a yapping Chihuahua.

My routine goes somewhere along these lines :-

Scan for and remove any malware.
Uninstall any unnecessary programs - e.g. toolbars!!
CCleaner - to remove junk files and excess restore points and rarely to clean the registry.
Codestuff Starter or Autoruns - to disable unnecessary startups.
MyDefrag or Puran Defrag - to defragment the hard drive.
Pagedefrag - to defragment the pagefile.
NTREGOPT - to optimize the registry.

If all else fails, add more RAM

I have never used either of these. Are they safe? Do you think they make much of a difference?

I just let Win7 keep my machine running smoothly. I use the onboard system config to set my startup items and the defrag to defrag. I us CCleaner and Revo for junkfiles but that's pretty much it. Run it lean and keep it clean.

Might be worth pointing out that when Chihuahua's yap too loudly they risk being sent to the doghouse

Both are perfectly safe and seem highly regarded, I've used them many times without problem.

When you initially run Pagedefrag it will tell you if there are any relevant fragmented files on your system that it is able to defrag. If there are, you can select the option to run a defrag on the next reboot. Just be patient even if it seems to be taking an overly long time to complete, it will get there eventually.

After setting Pagedefrag to run on next reboot, before I go ahead and restart the machine I run NTREGOPT. It will complete it's job fairly quickly but then requires a prompt system restart for the optimization to take effect....and in the process Pagedefrag then goes ahead and does it's thing too.

Their benefits will obviously depend on how fragmented the pagefile and registry hives are to begin with. The worse it is, the more likely you are to notice a difference.
Basically, by following the whole routine I mentioned in my previous post, the accumulative benefits add up to make a significant difference IHMO.

This all sounds very interesting. I never thought that the "untouchable" Pagefile could be defragged before I read your post.

I have Bookmarked it all and think I may try it out, but having always been taught to walk in the footsteps of the guy in front (always the one nobody likes and considered expendable), I am a bit cautious to ride point.

One thing is certain - anything released by Mark Russinovich is always a winner and Sysinternals are a great asset to us all.

The instructions for using Pagedefrag look a bit complicated to me.
