Default Downloads from Download.com

Someone else unsatisfied with downloads from Download.com?

First complain I have is that Download.com updates the versions of software very late. I prefer downloading software from their home sites, but nowadays some sites offer the download via Download.com only, and for such cases, it becomes a problem, because the version gets updated very late.

Apart from this problem, now, I have observed a new problem. Recently, Download.com changed the download page of software. Earlier, the download page showed which version of software was being downloaded, but now, there is no such information. Just the software name is there. This is quite a problem, because first, the versions get updated late, and now to add to that, because of the mentioned problem, we cannot know which version is being offered for download.

I will give an example of this.

Macrium Reflect is offering the download via Download.com on their product page :

http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp

The software has released a new version today, and I want to download the new version. Now, when I click the download which leads me to Download.com page, I get this :

http://download.cnet.com/Macrium-Ref...=dl&tag=button

You will see that apart from the name of the software, there is no other information about the software on the page, like its version, or the download size. Also, I did not find any link so that I could go one page up, to the software page on Download.com, where the description of the software is given, which contains a lot of information. If anyone can tell me how I reach that page, from the above page, please share with me here.

Either the download link from the software site should link to the software page on Download.com first, or Download.com should provide version information and setup size on the download page.

Download.com maybe a reputed and popular site for downloading software, but I do not like it because of the mentioned reasons.

I know this doesn't exactly address the issue of no information on the download page, but if you do a search for Macrium Reflect on Download.com you get this http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=macrium+reflect&tag=srch&searchtype=d ownloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=plat form%3DWindows

Yes, I know I can perform a search, but I shouldn't have to, once I reach the download page. Whats the point then, in giving a link from the site?

No offense intended Anupam, it just seemed possible you may not have searched the site for it. I agree with you entirely: it makes sense to have the information where it is useful, as it used to be.

I always used to choose download.com where possible as my preferred site for downloads but I have stopped using them for some time now. If I remember rightly, (not sure now), their download link to click often included other, not wanted, downloads too. They also tended to push other software which I didn't want too and/or maybe forcing signup for unwanted information. I may have got it a bit wrong here but I didn't just stop using their links for no reason.

This could become a serious problem for us if Download.com keeps going down hill to the point where they get a negative WOT rating. I doubt it will ever happen but they do already have quite a number of negative ratings.

I personally have never encountered any extra downloads from Download.com. But again, I don't use the site much, other than situations where the software site links to it.

Download.com is as I see a trustworthy site, and popular too. That's why many software vendors host their download there. But, if the site starts to go downhill, I am sure the vendors would stop hosting their download there, and find another alternative.

Last time I suffered a infection was for downloading from this site some
"extra" goodies. On my case it was a rootkit. The positive aspect of this
infection was that it was the button that got me interested about security.
I always try to download from the developers site and if that is not possible
I use Filehippo or Major geeks. I trust both sites, Filehippo is my favorite
site for downloading and I trust it with my eyes shut.
Anupam Filehippo shows the Version and lots of extra information about
what you intend to download.
http://www.filehippo.com/

I trust Filehippo so much that I feel safe installing files downloaded from
the site without scanning them first. They also make available previous
Versions of what you are downloading.

i havent had problems with download.com since i've used it in past years. While I might prefer other download site/methods, Download.com is one of my goto sites if I can't find it elsewhere. I've not noticed it being outdated either.

Just search for software and main page for it shows verison.

I'm not sure why Macrium gave that link and not the main link for it on download.com but that isnt download.com's fault :S
