I'd prefer to spend $45 and get something that's useful.

Well this is intended mostly for school students to surf net, read books, word processor and most importantly "paint"...specially in countryside where a $35 is still way too expensive and this will work only if government subsidies it or corporates fund it.

My feeling is that it is just not going to happen. There was quite an embarrassing episode a few months ago which got international coverage about another "cheapest" device, which turned out to be a pre-loaded USB or flash-drive.

The only encouraging aspect is that whoever it is has understood that proprietary software would raise costs!

A bit more over here:
How can India build a $35 tablet? More details emerge
Quote:
So not only is it apparent that the prototype only lays out the specifications for the tablet but that cost estimates rely on predictions of massive economies of scale and local government large-scale purchases. If this sounds familiar, it’s virtually the same rhetoric that Nicholas Negroponte used to convince the world that he could build a $100 laptop.

This isn’t to say that development efforts for highly-affordable student-centered computing devices shouldn’t continue in India and elsewhere. On the contrary, devices like these have the potential to leverage extraordinary advances in cloud computing and be part of both modern, connected classrooms as well as bridging the digital divide. A little dose of reality and perspective, however, is mighty important as we move towards those goals.

The secret to India's $35 tablet? They outsource everything to India!

I don't see any reason why India can't produce a Linux-capable tablet for $35 dollars. God provides all the raw materials for free. India has some of the cheapest labor in the world. Expensive patents can be avoided in low-end hardware. That leaves imported manufacturing equipment as the only big expense, but it has no marginal cost.

So, my question, why does it cost as much as $35?
