Post So you really want to understand Windows...

If Process Explorer and Process Monitor are terms that you are familiar with, and you think you know how to use them, then think again.

The 'Case of the Unexplained...' series by Mark Russinovich, co-author of the software, and now a Technical Fellow at Microsoft will make you think again. Here are two on-line lectures that are worth checking out:

http://www.microsoft.com/emea/spotli...px?videoid=722

You might need a Windows Live ID for the one above but it's worth it. It also provides links to loads of other on-line stuff that will tell you more about Windows internals than you ever wanted to know.

The link below is to the 2009 'Case of the Unexplained...', it assumes you have a fair bit of knowledge of the tools already.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s...s/default.aspx

If you want to know why a process doesn't run, but a thread does, and how the Windows memory manager works, this is for you.

You have a level of understanding of all things geeky that far exceed my ability to comprehend. But I always read your post, if for nothing else as a challenge that I might understand a smidgen of what your saying

Cheers

You are so right. Both my degrees came late in life but studying for them was nothing compared to trying to absorb this stuff, and most of it I can't. I'm glad I've moved over to Linux because now I've got an excuse

Keep it coming Rik

Psychology and business management.

Sorry though - I only feel the need to counsel Chelsea supporters in private

Yes, and I take it as a compliment.

In the unlikely event that I post something that might be worth looking into further, say a how-to or an article, then please feel free to let me know.

At the moment, finally having freed myself up from other things, I have the following on my to do list:

- Rewrite the article on making Vista run faster, leading on to articles on XP and Windows 7.

- TCP/IP tuning.

- Real programming tools in the Programming Tools section.

- Some test site related 'learning.'

Apart from that my time's my own. Get in quick though as in October next year I'm going back to uni to finish my PhD.

@DRE

My youngest son William, who has Down's Syndrome, supports Liverpool, he's mad about them. Last year his step Dad took him up to stay there for a few days for his birthday. He got to see a first team home match and on another day went for a look around the ground. I'm sure those days were the happiest of his life so far and will live in his memory forever.

So since William loves them. Respect!

Rik

Understandably so. Seeing that they and amongst other clubs like Manchester City wants to buy a title...

Hey Rik

Sorry bout your sons condition. Hope you love him with all your hart...

But hey, what a privilege it was for him to go and watch the most successful club ever! Who did LFC play at Anfield on that day? Which season?
