Default Are you guys aware of this?

This article was written in 2008. It may be old news but I wasn't aware of this...

Quote:
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has concocted a remarkable new policy: It reserves the right to seize for an indefinite period of time laptops taken across the border.
See article:

This is some sort of joke right? This seems to be U.S. only otherwise they wouldn't use the word 'homeland'. Guess I won't be going there...

This was the article I found while browsing just now, looks like the search continues.

See article:

and this,

Quote:
Internet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet.

The US Department of Homeland Security doesn't have the power to seize anything.

They advise the executive arms of the United States, Police, FBI, CIA, Customs on appropriate actions to be taken on US border control.

It is true that they, together with the NSA, have implemented certain policies over the last two years that are now being challenged in the Supreme Court for violation of constitutional rights.

They, like the NSA, seek to justify their existance, based on the 'threat' at US airports and so on. 9/11 was a tragedy, it seems unlikely that anyone would try that approach again.

To me, it seems about time that the US President put them in their place.

Check my sig, then you'll get the general idea.

It's been a week and I was sort of expecting more replies... Anyway, if the US Department of Homeland Security doesn't have the power to seize anything and they are challenged in the Supreme Court for violation of constitutional rights, then why isn't it in any of the article I've read? Did I missed them? Well, I don't think I'll be worrying about it anytime soon, at least not yet.

Check my new signature.

This is not a real signature, just try quoting it and it will be in the quote (I think).
