Gmail requires mobile number

Anyone read or know about this new Gmail requirement? They say if you don't have a mobile number capable to receive SMS messages, then borrow a friends or you cannot receive an account

I remember they used to have that requirement and then dropped it.

I just now opened a new account there and was not asked for a mobile phone number. I am in the US.

According to this thread at Wilders, Google has backed off of this (although no confirming link is given).
