Win 7 was running beautifully until a few days ago and these problems started:
-flickering task bar, really annoyingly migraine inducing flickering - would not load ebay 2nd pages, only the home page - really slow to load internet - timed out for most web pages or came up with errors - all icons in bookmark/favourites list changed to plain white squares As it was originally running fine I knew it must be something I had installed. Going through the process it became apparant that the problem was with AVG v.9 Previously I had Avast anti-virus but it came up to tell me that I only had three days trial period left so, a few days ago, I uninstalled it and put on AVG, that's what caused the problems. I have now uninstalled AVG and downloaded Avira which is working absolutely fine. All the websites say that AVG is compatible with Win 7, maybe with earlier versions of AVG but certainly not v.9 I'm still finding my way around it but up to now I think it's lovely

AVG has lost its way somehow... it was considered to be a good antivirus earlier. Avast and Avira are better now. AVG does take up more resources.
If Avast was showing that trial period is about to get over... all you had to do was re-register for Avast, and get the key. Its free . With Avast Home Edition, it requires free registration which lasts for one year. The registration is free. Without registration, it lasts only for 4 months. You should have registered it.Anyways, Avira is good too. The only problems are updates, but according to a press release from Avira few days ago, the problem should be solved now with new system of updates.

Thanks Anupam. I'll see how it goes with Avira and if there's any prpoblems then I will go back to Avast.
and I will make sure I register

Elizabeth,
Many thanks for the information on AVG. It's a shame they seem to have lost focus, causing such severe problems on Microsoft's latest OS hardly inspires confidence ![]() Until I switched to 64 bit Windows last year I used the paid version of AVG 8.5 and was very happy with it. Since then I've used Avira and not even had the update problems that many have experienced. These evidently have now been resolved. AVAST is also very capable, although I must admit I'm not a great fan of the default 'games console' style skin. It will be interesting to see what AVAST 5 has to offer when it finally appears. I now use Windows 7 x64 all the time. Frankly I can't believe I put up with Vista from the early betas until the Windows 7 release candidate came out. I had hoped Microsoft would reward long suffering Vista users with a free upgrade to Windows 7 No such luck ![]() Thanks again, Rik Last edited by rikmayell; 22. Nov 2009 at 05:19 PM. Reason: typo |
