I installed Nuance Pdf Reader today, to check it out.
On installation, just before the finish, it pops up with a screen to register the product. There is no option for, not to register ever. There is an option however, to remind after 7 days. Thankfully, I did not download the setup from the Nuance site, because to download the setup, they require your name and email address. I am sure they would have sent me mails regularly to register their product, or buy other products of theirs.
The software tried to put the registration reminder in the startup, which was detected by WinPatrol. I denied it. The software also tried to put its update program in the startup which was again picked up by WinPatrol, and denied by me. When I checked out the update.ini, I noticed an entry user id, which I have a feeling, might be like the unique ID assigned by Google Chrome, for a particular setup.
The automatic web update, however, may be turned off from within the program.
All this has put me off though. I am not going to use this product. I think Pdf Xchange Viewer is a far better option than this software.
Also, to convert the pdf, a link is opened in the browser which is a web app. It too requires you to enter your email, where they will send the converted document. This service is like Zamzar. Anyways, I am not comfortable in providing my email. I think desktop applications might be better for conversion purposes.
The reader looks good though. I am not going to look into more detail. This software is going out of my PC.
