There are really only 4 different types of blank media; DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW....the latter two being the re-writeable ones. I prefer the DVD-R and DVD-RW, not because they are necessarily superior but because they are more universally accepted....i.e. that format is supported by all media players. I use DVD-R, but I keep all my movies forever so have no wish to overwrite them.

Other things to consider; Always buy well known brand name discs, avoid the cheapies....it's less expensive in the long run because your success rate with quality discs will be very near 100% whereas the cheaper ones will produce quite a few failures. Also, make sure the discs have a maximum write speed of 16X...(I think most do now).
That's all there is to it really.
