Most videos online will come in flash (.flv) format, so they will have to be converted. Probably the easiest way is to use the Firefox addon Christoph suggested.

Converting to DVD playable takes quite a bit longer than DivX/XviD conversion and the DivX/XviD can be burned to disc as regular data which is very quick.
