What you want to check on your mother's DVD player is whether it is "DivX Compatible". If it is, then it will be able to play videos encoded in either DivX or XviD. (These come in an .avi container). Also, check which types of discs the player will accept for this as my DVD player only accepts DivX/XviD on CD-R discs.

Most videos online will come in flash (.flv) format, so they will have to be converted. Probably the easiest way is to use the Firefox addon Christoph suggested.

Converting to DVD playable takes quite a bit longer than DivX/XviD conversion and the DivX/XviD can be burned to disc as regular data which is very quick.
