I too doubt that it's a trojan because the whole point of these things is that they want to phone home

How about trying a system restore back to a known point of good connection?
This might fix the Windows issues (if any) but I'm not sure about what input Acer has into these system functions.

I remember in another life once having a similarly temperamental FujiSiemens laptop and when this went awol you could reset it from a push-point on the base.
