I checked in uTorrent and the firewall exception is indeed enabled. I don't think I made any changes in Firewall except making sure uTorrent was on its list of exceptions. So I went back in and made sure again- it is. In fact for some reason, it is listed 3 times, but they are all checked so it should def be excepted!
As for the security software, I used to have something called IOLO System Mechanic, anti-virus, and firewall, but I don't think they were ever actually working. The only time anything ever popped up was for updates that never successfully completed. So, I eventually removed the program through Add/remove programs. However, some files remained in my Program Files folder, so I just restarted in Safe Mode and deleted all traces of IOLO.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have helped my issue. As to your question regarding a network icon, I actually have no icon at all. I have read elsewhere that there should be some kind of indicator, but I do not have one there, it's only the two indicators on the bottom.
